[13 diplomatic letters to Laurence Hyde, 1st earl of Rochester], 1701 Jul. 15 - Nov. 7.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of 13 drafts of diplomatic letters from Blathwayt to Hyde. 12 were written from Holland when Blathwayte was secretary of state to William III, in which discusses his intention of keeping Lord Rochester informed of events during his attendance on the King. Other subjects include John Churchill, 1st duke of Marlborough, the Treaty of Alliance, the plot in Ireland, reinforcement of Leeward Islands, and the feasibility of additional regiments for Ireland and Jamaica. In one letter, for example, he writes, "although your Lordship mentions these Regts to be for the W. Indies yet in the computation they are said to be designed for Jamaica, for the Leeward Islands where the Warr has always hitherto broke out to our disadvantage for the want of some standing force."

The letter was written before the Prince of Orange's ascension to the throne of England in 1689 along with his wife Mary, his first cousin whom he married in 1677. They served jointly on the English throne.
